Classic Websites Platform: Customizing Your Homepage

Working with your website's configurable homepage options
HAVE A RESPONSIVE TEMPLATE? If so, please instead consult the
Responsive Template section for support.

PhotoShelter offers a variety of customization options to help you configure your homepage to best suit your needs. After you've picked a Theme, spend some time playing around with the different homepage options to get the look and feel you're after.

Choosing a Homepage Option

1. To customize your homepage, select Website from the Navigation Bar and then select Archive Page Settings from the navigation on the left-hand side. From the list of pages displayed there, select My Homepage.

2. Start with the first drop-down, Homepage mode, which gives you five options for your homepage layout. At any time, you can click the Preview This Page button to see how your website will look with that particular option selected.

Display with featured galleries
Featured galleries are simply galleries you wish to display with image previews (we refer to the representative images for galleries as cover images) on your site's homepage. You may display large cover images for up to six galleries, and small cover images for up to 15 galleries.
Display with photo wall
Display thumbnail images from your featured gallery selection or your most recently updated galleries. Using the highly configurable options provided, you can change the layout pretty dramatically with respect to image size, aspect ratio, and overall presentation.
Go to Portfolio page
Lead visitors directly to your Portfolio page. If you have more than one gallery selected as a Portfolio, the first in the list will display.
Go to Gallery List page
Display all the galleries listed on your website, each represented by a cover image thumbnail. The Gallery List page is useful when linking your PhotoShelter site into another site.
Go to Advanced Search page
This page allows your visitors to search all images in your PhotoShelter website that you have marked as searchable. The Advanced Search page is also useful when linking your PhotoShelter site into another site.

3. Depending on which Homepage mode you choose, you'll see different options displayed. Here we break those down. Remember that no matter which option you choose, click the Save Page Layout button at the bottom of the page to commit your changes.

If you chose Display with featured galleries...

Display Featured Gallery
Choose whether you want your featured gallery or galleries to display as a static image or as a Flash-based slideshow. If you're conscious of SEO, we recommend displaying as a static image (search engines cannot read Flash-based material).
Feature Gallery Size
If you're displaying your featured gallery as a static image, we'll give you the option to size it according to the particular theme you've chosen. If you're displaying your featured gallery as a Flash-based slideshow, you'll have the option to choose a Flash slideshow preset (a set of options for the slideshow you have created ahead of time). You can click "view presets" to customize these options or create a new preset on the spot. Read more about setting up slideshows here.
Display Small Featured Galleries
Checking this box will display your small featured galleries on your homepage below the large featured galleries.
Statement Paragraph (HTML accepted)
The Statement Paragraph may be used to provide an artist's statement or any other copy that you'd like visitors to see on your homepage. Click into this field to provide the text and formatting you'd like using our Rich Editor. You may use straight HTML if you prefer by clicking the HTML tab to enter your code. (Note that the Statement Paragraph is not available with the Farah theme.)
Featured Galleries
This is where you designate which gallery or galleries you want to be featured on your homepage, meaning the cover images from these galleries will be displayed. If you're not familiar with our Featured Galleries tool, read our tutorial on Adding Galleries To Your Homepage.

If you chose Display with photo wall...

Source
Choose whether you want your photo wall gallery thumbnails to come from your selected featured galleries or recently updated galleries. Read more about featured galleries here.
Aspect
Natural, Rectangular, Square, or Constrain height: Do you want your images to fit in uniformly sized containers, or do you prefer clustering them together in their natural width:height ratios? If you want to keep the existing natural width:height ratio, but still keep the images in even rows, choose the "Constrain height" option, after which you may set the "Row height" option to fit your preference.
Padding between thumbs
This determines how far away your images will sit from one another.
Rounded corners
Choose a degree of rounding between 0-8 pixels for the corners of your images. Note that this effect uses CSS3, and therefore is not supported by IE6, IE7, IE8, or IE9.
Half-size thumbnails
Small featured galleries or less recent galleries will display at half-size.
Hover effect
You may choose to apply a light or dark mask over the images in your photo wall. The mask will be removed when a visitor hovers over an image, which creates a fading in/out visual effect.
Show gallery name
Choose "Yes" or "Only on hover," which determines if your gallery name is displayed persistently over the image, or shows on mouse hover only.
Watermark larger images
You may opt to hide the watermark on the images in your photo wall only. This will not affect watermarking behavior on any other images on your site.
