Metadata fields?

Wondering about certain metadata fields in the IPTC? Having searched the internet on the topic, the results with volumes of single spaced text on Dublin Core etc.. and too be honest go over my head, glazing my eyes and forcing me to grab the Scotch.

I'm just looking to find simple answers on how certain metadata fields should be logged in. The specific fields are Category, Genre, Scene, Subject Code, and Web Statement?

anyone know of a white paper written that can easily explain in simple terms how these particular metadata fields should be filled in and if there is a controlled vocabulary list for each field that needs to be used?

Any help is appreciated.

  Hi Jeff,

  To be honest, there are no fixed rules, and every photographer uses them differently. The fields are there to use (or not) for whatever system works best for you, and you are free to ignore them. Unless you work for a press photo agency, where this sort of thing is decided by the agency themselves, I wouldn't get too worked up about it. But by all means carry on drinking Scotch!

  It is a matter of choice. Or more specifically a matter of working out what your client/agencies want. For me life is too short to fill out every single box.
