You can easily modify the sort order of your Library images, galleries, and collections in PhotoShelter using broad "default" strokes, or you can Custom Sort individual Galleries.
Sorting your content can be useful for organizing and working with your Library, but it is particularly important for anything that's designated as Listed on Website, as the sort order you choose below for your Default Sort is what's reflected to your website visitors:
Setting default sort orders for your Library
The sort order setup in Lumen allows you to set a sort in your Library that is different from the sort that exists on your website. This will help if you want to work in your Library without impacting the website sort.

Setting Sort Defaults
A few important pieces of information to keep in mind:
- Choosing a sort order within galleries and collections will sort ALL the containers the same way in the Library only; your website's sort order is set in a different way. In other words, in browsing your Library if you set a sort order and navigate between galleries or collections, the sort you see will be the same.
- Setting a Default sort order in your Library Settings will list your Library with that sort setting each time you log in, but if you change the sort within the session, all of your galleries will be sorted to what you have changed it to during that session. (i.e. default is A-Z, but I change it to Old to New, the next time I log out and back in, it will be A-Z). Your default sort orders can be set under Settings > Sort.
Setting the Sort Order within your Galleries for the Website
To change the sort order of your images on the website, follow these steps:
- Select the gallery you want to sort in the left pane.
- At the top of the center pane, click the sort order dropdown (it will state the current sort order, i.e. "Name - A to Z"). Click "Edit" next to "Custom."
- Clicking "Edit" will show you the sort order that is currently on your website. You can now choose your desired sort from the list of sort options. To change the direction of the sort, you can use the arrows icon next to the selected sort.
Note: If you have 500 or fewer images in this gallery, you will have the option to create a custom sort order. Click the checkbox for the files you want to reorder and drag and drop them in your desired order.
- Click Save.
Sort Options
Lumen's (the New Library UI) default sort order is Name A-Z. To adjust the sort order, click the the Sort option at the top of the center pane:
You can also reverse the order of your images, galleries or collections using the reverse sort arrows next to the Sort option.
Other Sort options include Date Created - Old to New and Date Modified - Old to New.
Depending on your preference, you can also choose to display Collections or Galleries first. This change will affect all galleries and collections in both Listed and Unlisted.
Custom Sort
Custom sort is a great option if you're looking to control the sequence of Collections, Galleries or files that your end-users see on the website.
To custom sort a Collection or Gallery:
- Select a container (Collection or Gallery) in the Library tree
- Click the Sort option at the top of the right pane, then select "Custom" > "Edit".
-
Select a file by clicking it, then drag it into your preferred order. Save to update the custom sort.
